EVEREST BASE CAMP & ISLAND PEAK, NEPAL
An earthquake in Nepal killed nearly 9,000 people and injured over 22,000, which occurred on 25 April 2015. I joined the Rebuild Nepal program raising over $700aud for the Nepalese people and had planned to visit the country in September/October that same year and spend time being part of this program by volunteering my time to assist in building, caring for children and cooking for families. I was then going to spend time exploring the Himalayas and trek to Everest basecamp. Unfortunately due to personal reasons, I had to withdraw my spot in the program and allow another person to go on my behalf. This was heartbreaking for me. Therefore; in November this year, I will be self funding a trip to Nepal to attempt Island Peak in the Himalayas; also known as Imja Tse. The peak sits at a whopping 6,189m which will be my highest climb to date. This strenuous climb will require me to hike up to the famous Everest basecamp (finally!!!) for acclimatisation and then continue onwards and upwards to Island Peak base camp where I will be sleeping in a tent in freezing temperatures and wearing/using crampons, an ice axe, harness and helmet to cross crevasses and glaciers in high altitude to hopefully have me successfully standing on the summit on my 29th birthday - 24th November.
